Hey, I meant to tell you this earlier and it slipped my mind. If there are any paper mills near you, you might want to check and see if they are replacing their big rubber belts anytime soon. My sister just matted her whole stable with a one of the "small" belts from Weyerhaeuser in Longview. For free, no less. Worth checking out.

That's what I use in my barn too. They are lighter than the ones at the feed stores and much easier to move around. It doesn't require 3 football players to move them! LOL I also have the actual belting strips that I am making my round pen out of also. I will get some pics up after...if the hubby ever gets it put together...( sore subject! LOL)

Oh, man....they just shut down Georgia Pacific here. Wonder if there's anyone left and if I could get the belts? Guess a trip to town is in order today...
Thanks!

you might want to also try checking the grocery stores. At the Pullman Safeway's we use mats in areas and they do get new ones every once and awhile.

I have one stall done in the belting and I despise it. It's slick in the winter, stuff continually gets under them buckling them up. I cant wait to get that crud OUT of that stall!
We had some of it cut into strips too, as it was popular at the time to use for fencing. NOPE!! It sheds strings all the time, and will quite literally pull railroad ties out of the ground. I have a big ol' stack of that crap to get rid of!
If you're going to mat a stall, do it the right way. The wide belting doesn't work.

Hopefully you'll be able to find something that works. I guess it just depends on the person. Andrea and Horsegal don't seem to have a problem with it so I guess it just depends on the way it's being used, I guess..

Thanks, Zim, for the heads up. I wondered about it being slick, and since I've got a shed style barn, that would only compound the problem.

Yeah, I guess in certain situations it wouldn't work. Hopefully you find something that will!

Those belts work great for me. However, I am totally inside with them. I find it harder to handle the big ones though...I like the fact that I can move the mats myself and not require an army to get it done. I have sand under my mats so they stay in place for the most part...all mats move but my belts move just as much as the regular heavy ones.

If you're going to mat a stall, do it the right way. The wide belting doesn't work. I agree. I boarded at a place that used belting for mats, it sucked big time, bedding/crap was always getting under the edges and made stall cleaning properly much harder to do (and I'm hella picky when it comes to my stall) it drove me nuts! I'd rather have a stall with a dirt floor and no matting than that belt stuff!

My barn is a shed roof with gravel footing...Something over the gravel would be nice. But...with the shed roof and open side I don't really want the rain blowing in and getting it too slick. I may try to build the gravel up higher then put some hog fuel or something on top.
