Hello - I'm looking for either grass/alfalfa mix or good orchard grass hay. Preferably in Ellensburg/Yakima area?
I would like to get 4-5 tons and can come pick up but need to know where to get it.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks! T

The big hay seller in Ellensburg is Anderson hay they always seem to have lots...

Can you buy directly from Andersons? We sell SOME to them but I have never asked if a person can go directly to them and buy out of their storage stacks. All I know that our contract with them says it will go transport, or diary or feed store.
A couple of people you might try here in the George/Quincy area are Scott Hodges or Allen Evenson.. both are in the book,,..... sorry, dont know the numbers right off hand.

What are prices like in that area right now? I'm wondering if it's worth hauling some over here for myself, or if it's just going to be easier to buy from the feed store.

Most of the time farmers will sell for less if you come and get it... feed stores make money off of hay. Let me put it this way.... they buy it for 130 a ton, they pay for shipping and that is 40 to 50 bucks per ton... so that puts it at say 170-180 per ton, now they have to make money off of it..so they have to charge 190 to 200 per ton to make some $$$ NOW, think of it this way..... if they buy it from the farmer for 130 a ton, for 100 lb bales and they sell it by the bale for 13.00 bucks... they just doubled their money cuz they paid only 6.50 per bale for the hay. OK... so now here is another twist. The feed store wants us to make a 80 to 90 lb bale...and if we do that, they will still sell that bale for 13.00 bucks...THAT is where they really make the money because they are selling a lighter bale but still getting the bigger dollar.
If any of you out there buy by the bale... make sure its a 100 lb bale at least.....I know they are harder to move around.. but you at least are getting more hay in that bale.
Also... a little bleached out hay is just as good as the pretty green stuff... believe me, your horses wont care if the hay is bleached......BUT.... your pocket book will...Bright green hay just means that it went up dryer, didn't get as much dew...they bleached out hay just got heavy dew then bleached by the sun or got a sprinkle of rain then dried by the sun.
I took Tiff a ton of hay, pure, nice alfalfa but it was sun bleached... did she really care... NOPE... the horses will eat it just the same. Hate to see ya all spend a lot of money on hay just cuz you want that pretty green stuff.
I would selll you some of ours but it is all sold. Third is comming off soon but I dont know what the prices will be for that either... have to wait till it is in the bale.

Oh, I understand mark up. I was just wondering if the gas prices from here to there would make it worth the trip. I suspect there's a difference if I am buying two or three tons vs 10 or 20, as well.

My farrier called me today. She found a great deal on good hay. Wants to know if I want to buy a semi from her, basically she'll buy it but have them deliver it to me. I have to get the semi load full (averaging 25 tons) but I can get it for $150 a ton. So, yes buying a lot at once is much cheaper than buying only a couple of tons at a time.

THAT is an excellent price, especially delivered and stacked at your place....check out the quality or if you can get a name of the farmer and its close, I will go check it out for you. There is some second cutting around here that got major rain damage...

Well, we actually have to stack it, but that's okay we usually help anyway. I'm hopefully going to go check out the hay she's already had delivered and see if I like it or not before I commit. I'll get the name and all that from her and let you know.

The alfalfa Susie brought me is gorgeous! An inch of so of sun bleaching on the outside does not matter at all. You break those bales open and they are perfect! Horses don't complain either, lol.
